ABOUT the artist

My favorite material in recent years has been tin from beer and soda cans. Working with thin sheet metal reminds me of working with paper and I use the same simple tools as for paper: scissors, ruler and knitting needles. The tin plate is very pleasant to work with and is available in lots of nice colors and patterns. In addition, it gives an extra satisfaction to be able to turn trash into something beautiful and, at best, thought-provoking.

ABOUT the exhibition

ABOUT the Gallery

The Crafts Center Foundation was founded in 1990 by the then KIF (Sveriges Konsthantverkare og Industriformgivare) and is the only purely professional organization for professionally active artisans and craftsmen in Sweden. We have offices in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmรถ. Our roughly 800 members are marketed through public events, exhibitions and mediating efforts, as well as supported through coaching, skills development and networking opportunities, both nationally and internationally. The goal is to strengthen the status of the arts and crafts and contribute to an improved financial situation for practitioners in the field. Do you want to become a member? Enter here.

What are arts and crafts?
Handicrafts can include both utility objects, sculptural objects, spatial installations and public representations, with a common point of departure in handiwork as a knowledge platform. Contemporary handicrafts have developed from specific and historically utility-based crafts. It is both rooted in and takes off from these material-based traditions, mainly in ceramics, glass, metal, textiles, paper and wood. Crafts is an independent field of art and knowledge that has undergone an expansive development during the twentieth century, not least in Sweden. Specially focused higher education courses for arts and crafts generate a strong professional body, and for more than a decade the field has also been established as an academic research area. At the same time, solid vocational and apprenticeships contribute to professional establishment.

Economy & cooperation
The operation is financed through support from the State Council for Culture, Region Stockholm, Region Skรฅne and the Vรคstra Gรถtaland region. We represent Sweden in the World Crafts Council-Europe and in the Michelangelo Foundation’s cultural council. The arts and crafts center is also part of NNCA, The Nordic Network of Crafts Association, together with our sister organizations in the other Nordic countries: Norske Kunsthรฅndverkere and Norwegian Crafts (NO), Danske Kunsthรฅndverkare og Designere (DK), Ornamo (FI), and Handverk og Honnun (IS ).

Designed living environment
The Arts and Crafts Center sees many opportunities for our profession to be involved in processes that affect the designed living environment. In everything from public design work to meeting the need for functionality and tactility in public environments, the skills of artisans can be an asset.

What is designed living environment?
The policy area shaped living environment was presented by the Swedish government in 2018 and the goals for the policy were subsequently decided by the Riksdag. The goals are about creating a holistic view of our public environments, how they are designed and developed, but also how culturally historically valuable places are activated. The policy area deals with e.g. about how people’s needs and everyday life should be met through architecture, design, form, art and the cultural environment. Four government agencies are tasked with working together to drive dialogue and examine how the goals can be achieved: the Housing Authority, the Swedish Heritage Agency, ArkDes and the State Council for the Arts.
