ABOUT the artist

Who am I?

Artist – maybe.

I have had a long period when I did things other than art. It has been a long time since I had a traditional exhibition. I am educated at the Royal Academy of Arts (“Mejan” 1977-82). I was active for about ten years in the 80s and 90s. The motivation and income failed in the early 90s and I devoted myself to other things, i.a. programming of computer games for children and websites. After a longer break, I am now painting again. I have picked up the thread exactly where I left it. I work in a Nordic tradition of realistic landscape painting, with an element of symbolism.

Activism

I had a little difficulty adapting to school and to the traditionally marked paths. I preferred to walk in the forest and listen to the birds. I thought a lot about whether our civilization is really that successful. My basic feeling is that the human race has become monstrously dominant over all other life forms. This has not prevented me from feeling that the western cultural heritage is an inalienable part of who I have become. So I have always been interested in social issues and cannot help but express my opinions. I am a child of “prog” and my art definitely has a political dimension. Environmental issues and nature conservation particularly interest me. This means that I like to see society and the economy in an ecological perspective. For me, economics is physical resource management and population issues.

The supply

Neither art nor thinking has been my livelihood. I have instead worked with programming and in recent years I have mostly worked with disabled people in a daily business. Most of all, I have my wife Margareta to thank for allowing me to remain free and unfettered in thought. Without compelling loyalties, I have had the privilege of being able to follow the natural progression of my interests and opinions.

ABOUT the exhibition

My first memories are of the scent of resin and lingonberries in the forests of Klarälvdalen. It is the tadpole in rock pools and sheltered bays of Lake Vänern. There are lichen-crunching alluvial forests on archipelago islands. In my teens, I discovered the forest and marshland area of Florarna in Norduppland. When others traveled on Interrail in Europe, I hiked in Lapland’s mountainous forests. I have my spiritual and biological roots in Sweden and that is a basis for everything valuable.
In art, I have felt a special calling to depict the Swedish forest. It is a difficult subject area, not least because of all the details. I do not tolerate superficiality and false emotionality. I require my images to be biologically true even if the main purpose is to convey a feeling, to explore a connection that goes deeper than facts.
