CFHILL – Rudolf Nordström – Days, Years & Centuries – September 2 to 30, 2022 – Västra Trädgårdsgatan 9 – Open Tue. to Fri. 12-17.00, Sat 12-16.00

ABOUT the exhibition

“I’m not sure which modernist critic said that it wasn’t possible to do anything with landscape anymore. But when people say things like that I’m always perverse enough to think, ‘Oh, I’m sure it is’. I thought about it, then I decided that it couldn’t be true because every generation looks differently. Of course you can still paint landscape – it’s not been worn out.”

— David Hockney, OM, CH, RA

Although the fact may be surprising to some, landscape painting, as pointed out by David Hockney, is positively thriving in the 21st century. Indeed, the genre is arguably as vital as ever today. Whether as a reaction to our technological present or as a manifestation of our fears concerning our environmental future, depictions of the natural world in painting have never seemed so pertinent and urgent. Some of the most ambitious, crucial, and intellectually vibrant paintings created so far in this century involve the landscape.

This is evident, for example, in Peter Doig’s magic realist renderings of Trinidad, Maureen Gallace’s serene views of beach cottages by the foaming ocean, and David Hockney’s radiant depictions of seasonal change in the English and French countryside. Other celebrated contemporary practitioners include Mamma Andersson, Amy Bennett, Andreas Eriksson, Alex Katz, and Anselm Kiefer.

One of the things that the momentous events of the past few years have taught us is the important role of art in our lives, particularly as we go through challenging times. We yearn for opportunities to view works of art again without restrictions, and our longing reinforces what we already knew: that art has the power to improve our emotional state, offering succour in addition to delighting, stimulating, informing, and, above all, bringing joy. And what could possibly bring more joy than a well-executed depiction of the beauty of nature?

This is why we are so delighted to present this exhibition of landscape paintings, sixteen in total, by Rudolf Nordström. Having spent the last two years travelling across the world, Nordström continually painted oils in the open air – like 19th-century painters such as Claude Monet and John Constable – standing in front of his subject in all kinds of weather. He has studied natural light and its shifting impact on nature’s colours in a variety of exotic locations, including Kenya, Segovia, Salamanca, and Lion-sur-Mer.

He has also undertaken artistic explorations of this kind at home, recently producing works that depict a remote corner of Gotland. Nordström has set about examining this tiny area every bit as obsessively as Monet did Giverny. These paintings are concerned with the discovery of the macrocosm within the microcosm – the endless variety of the natural world, or, as Vincent van Gogh put it, “the infinity of nature.” The landscape paintings in question also express Nordström’s preoccupation with how human beings see, and – a slightly different matter – how we see pictures: the more we look, the more we see…
