ABOUT the artist
Anna Camner, born 1977, lives and works in Stockholm and has exhibited in Sweden and internationally since graduating from the Royal Institute of Art in 2003. Her work has previously been exhibited in solo shows in Stockholm, London and New York, and featured in The International Biennial of Contemporary Art (BIACI) in Cartagena, Colombia in 2014, Mumbai, India in 2019, and at the Armory Show, NY, USA, in 2020. In conjunction with being awarded the prestigious annual Beckers Art Award in 2017, her work was exhibited at Färgfabriken, Stockholm, Sweden.
Anna Camner’s probing searchlight puts objects under clinical scrutiny. Layers are peeled off and details are accentuated, exposed and redefined. With a starting point in the painterly process, Camner brings real, imaginary and invented motifs towards the perception of a metaphysical reality. With a time consuming and meticulous painterly process, Camner builds a distinct, sealed world with it’s own logic.
A focal theme in her artistic work is the ongoing hybridization between man and synthetics. Whether it is industrially manufactured masses of turquoise polymers or pink fetish gloves, Camner focuses on the aspects of light, texture and composition. By mixing suggestive motifs with human, sexual and mental references, Anna Camner builds a mysterious imagery; a melting pot filled with poisons and lust.
The fragmentary perspectives of organic forms and membranes build up allusions with sexual undertones. Elastic and lubricous materials are balancing on the floating border between what is natural and artificial. The objects are in the process of becoming, on the edge of the material world. Mainly abstract, yet strangely familiar, the narratives are pushed to the surface from the deep black depths; desire translated into equivocal shapes in a calm renaissance manner.
ABOUT the exhibition
Wetterling Gallery is pleased to present our first solo exhibition with painter Anna Camner, The Naked Dive. Opening Reception will take place on Thursday, March 24 from 5 – 8 pm.
Camner’s oil paintings are characterized by outstanding technique and precision. With a time-consuming and meticulous painterly process, Camner builds a distinct, sealed world with its own logic. A focal theme in her artistic work is the ongoing hybridization between man and synthetics. In her motifs, Camner focuses on all aspects of light, texture, and composition. With an illusory atmosphere, the paintings can be interpreted as windows for the viewer to observe objects of the subconscious.
In The Naked Dive, Camner has moved on from the organic and scientific aesthetics significant to her previous series. Several works are set in an industrial factory environment. Volumes of something that can be perceived as a blue viscous plastic mass rush towards the viewer and sometimes take on an almost human form. Camner also examines this toxic substance in several close studies, swirling and tempting, the rich mass allure. Other works are figurative; a porcelain hand, a close-up of a pair of fetish gloves, and a doll’s head – all examined in the same factual way and depicted against the pitch-black void characteristic of Camner’s art. By mixing suggestive motifs with human, sexual, and mental references, Anna Camner builds a mysterious imagery; a melting pot filled with poisons and lust.
In connection with the exhibition, the book Anna Camner, Selected Works 2014-2022, is published, which includes an essay and introduction to Camner’s oeuvre, written by the art journalist Nils Forsberg
ABOUT the space
Wetterling Gallery is one of the leading galleries for contemporary art in Scandinavia, with a dynamic program of both highly internationally acclaimed artists, and young upcoming artists from Sweden. With a unique and playful entrance to the art world, Wetterling Gallery stands for quality and relevance in the present. We make art available to a curious audience.
Founded in 1978, we consider ourselves a long-term partner for our artists, collectors, institutions, and the general public that plays a significant role in the development of both the local and the international art scene. With a history of bringing international artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, and Frank Stella to Sweden we are today also presenting Swedish artists to the international art scene. Our vision is to provide a platform for dialogue and meetings between different forms of artistic expression, and between people.
The gallery arranges six exhibitions annually in the main space in Stockholm, and around the same number in the project space that was inaugurated in 2015, allowing the gallery program to be more dynamic. Wetterling Gallery also has a showroom in Gothenburg, where a curated selection of our collections is shown on regular basis.
Please note that our exhibition program is researched and developed well in advance and we are unable to accept unsolicited approaches for meetings, exhibitions, or projects.
