ABOUT the artist
“My goal is to animate shapes in such a way as to provide scope for the viewer’s imagination and playfulness”
Swedish-born artist Happy Wilder currently lives in Stockholm but is typically nomadic. He creates artworks in which he paints with light, using physical tools, a bit like a glassblower blows his art. These works come from his “Monochrome and Negative” collection, which recalls the origins of photography, when negatives were an essential part of the process and photography was more than a matter of “point and shoot.” The artist places great value on putting spectators’ imagination and emotions in play. The Japanese titles even allow the viewer to approach the works with an open mind.
Wilder got his start studying museum education and psychology at Stockholm University, then studied environmental science at Gothenburg University. He has exhibited in juried group shows at Fotografiska Stockholm in 2017 and at Nacka Konsthall in 2019. Coming up later this year, his work will occupy Scandic Malmen hotel in central Stockholm. He’s also done performances, creating portraits at Burning Man and at the Lightning in a Bottle music festival in California; his work has been on display at the 2020 Fotografiska Studio Live. https://happywilder.com/happy
ABOUT the exhibition
The art world is a cluster of many different islands. Burning Man is one such forum, a place in the Nevada desert where incredible works of art are created that stand outside the conventional template. My unpretentious way of trying to be myself/someone totally different & experiences from creative places such as Burning Man gives me more taste for boundless & playful creation. These premises also reflect aspects that I personally affirm. My random name change is a consequence of this emergence of synergy, also my way of life. Sustaining an influential & inspirational lifestyle is key for a correspondingly interesting output.
The process of my digital art can start with an image of a graffiti wall or a wooden structure that fascinates me. I blend these with photos of my acrylics or watercolor paintings. Finally I merge everything with my light painting portraits – getting these surreal art pieces as a result.
